Bank transfers – How to make a payment
What information do you need to give when conducting a bank transfer?
Make sure you use the correct account number and sort code when you make a phone or online payment. Banks rely on these rather than the name of the person or company.
The name of the person or business you’re paying.
The six-digit sort code (for example, 12-34-56) and eight-digit account number (for example, 12345678). This is on your bill, or should be provided by the person you’re paying.
A payment reference (often your name or customer number) to make sure they know that the money comes from you.
Sometimes the name and address of the bank you are sending the money to – this is to check that the sort code is right. Don’t worry, most of the time you won’t need it.
The date you want the payment to be made.
